Our ethos at Function Jigsaw is that ‘if you have the will, we have the way’, writes Lauren Dobson
We thrive on helping clients reach their personal goals whatever they may be. As a business, we specialise in sports injury management but have a multi-discipline approach with several services available from sports therapy, sports massage to functional movement screening and specialised one-to-one programmes, nutrition and psychology services.
On top of that, we are soon to be launching a new programme for athletes who want to really challenge themselves and look at ways to improve their abilities and set new personal goals.
There are many people who take part in sport/exercise for leisure and enjoyment or purely to keep fit and healthy, but a high percentage of these people are very competitive in nature and could set their bar a bit higher with the correct guidance.
Whether you want to set new personal goals on your Strada at the weekend, or beat the local neighbour when running up a hill, our new FJ Performance programme can help you reach those markers.
A global approach
The idea of FJ Performance is to give a ‘global approach’ to performance and help individuals understand the chapters that need to be considered.
The pillars of performance that are dealt with are mindset, strength & conditioning, nutrition and recovery.
We trailed the package on multi-national cycling champion Matt Bottrill, who is making the transition from the bike to the triathlon arena for a whole new challenge.
With six weeks of hard work and determination behind him, the FJ Performance package proved successful and Matt won the Leicester Sprint Triathlon.
In May, just after Matt’s success, we hosted a seminar evening to an audience of amateur and semi-professional cyclists explaining the results of Matt’s hard work.
It was a huge challenge mentally and physically for Matt and all of the FJ Performance services he took advantage of were 100 per cent necessary and included: sports injury management, strength & conditioning, sports nutrition and sports psychology.
Phenomenal improvements in all areas
At the start of the six-week programme, baseline tests were carried to measure areas like muscular strength, body composition, mobility, postural analysis and performance analysis including speed, technique and endurance.
The results of these were used to create Matt’s personal FJ Performance programme.

On testing day, when we took Matt off the bike, he would be the first to admit that he looked like Bambi on ice, trying to do the other disciplines needed for a triathlon.
Matt struggled to engage certain muscles and perform basic demands with poor results on the majority of the testing that didn’t involve riding the trusty bike.
At the end of the six weeks, however, not only did Matt go on to win his triathlon, the re-test results showed phenomenal improvements in all areas of overall performance.
Soon, the FJ Performance programme will be available for our clients to get stuck into. And FJ staff will be on hand to guide and advise them through every stage and discuss individual needs and goals at length.
Coming soon: Part Two of this blog will describe in detail the processes that Matt Bottrill went through and describe both why they were necessary and what effect they had on the final outcome.
