What is a Wattbike? What does it do?
It is explained as THE best indoor training bicycle by the British Cycling Team, the ‘gold-dust’.
The Wattbike was created and launched in 2008 to provide an affordable indoor bike, used for training and testing that is suitable for everyone from school children to elite athletes.
It is used by both cyclists and other athletes in the professional environments, loved by the Olympic champions, endorsed by athletes including Jessica Ennis-Hill, and the 126kg Saracens and England rugby player Billy Vunipola.
Burn calories, build stamina and get a brilliant cardio workout, whatever the weather, and more…
It is easy to get a good fit and feels rigid and strong when you hop on. Clip the pedals in and away you go.
The Wattbike team explain that since we started work on our pioneering indoor power trainer in 2000 we’ve been obsessed. Obsessed with perfectly replicating the sensation of riding on the road. Obsessed with generating the world’s most accurate power, technique and performance data. Obsessed with creating the ultimate indoor cycling experience.
“It’s the most precise, high quality, personalised training tool I have found. Whether it’s performance on the road, the pitch or just life in general, the Wattbike is the magic ingredient. I can’t recommend it highly enough.” Nic Gill – New Zealand Rugby Team Strength & Conditioning Coach
The key difference between the Wattbike and every other indoor bike is that the Wattbike accurately measures your training strengths and weaknesses.
Within seconds we can measure different key factors from your output, pedalling techniques, heart rate, imbalances, weaknesses and more.
Then with that information you can pick out which areas need work, monitor progressions and regressions and set your new goals and targets whatever they may be.
Wattbike gives immediate measurements and feedback on the display, it measures your speed, force, power and more, however, it also analyses your pedalling technique.
Each and every rotation is stored in the bike’s software, illustrating where and when you apply power through your legs. For the amateur, this is incredibly instructive, as you can save a huge amount of energy just by pedalling efficiently.
Matt Bottrill Performance Coaching offers cyclists of all abilities the chance to achieve their goals, whether they are time triallists, triathletes, road racers or sportive riders.
“Within a minute of starting to ride the Wattbike, it was obvious that I was favouring my left leg, roughly 53/47, left to right. I had no idea I did this. With the feedback loop, it was 50/50 within five minutes – hopefully my muscle memory will do its job next time I’m out on the road” says a member of Matt Bottrill’s new performance coaching team.
Matt Bottrill, National Championship and Performance Coach explains that ‘instantly I was amazed by the feel of riding the Wattbike, which was matched by the range and quality of the data as I went through each test. Using the Wattbike very quickly brought huge benefits to my training’
Understanding the Wattbike:
It is easy to use, simply adjust the bike to the correct height and your body position, sit on the Wattbike and ‘Just Ride’. The performance computer will then give immediate cycling feedback.
What can you get from a Wattbike session?
Wattbike sessions give cyclists, Tri-athletes, and other disciplines including rowers and rugby players, the opportunity to train smarter; like the pro’s do. It’s training by numbers.
You can train as a group with your friends or team members or you can train on your own.
Joanna Rowsell, MBE, 3 time Olympic Champion says “It’s the best way to train but it’s also the most painful. I look at the Wattbike and I think I don’t want to get on and push myself more, but it’s those sessions that really pay off”.
A structured approach to training immediately improves efficiency and fine-tunes your performance.
One of the main advantages of using a Wattbike include using exactly the same muscles as when you’re out on a road bike opposed to a spin bike, turbo trainer and any other average indoor bike.
Crucially, your performance gains will be measurable and noticeable very quickly when training outside on the road or even your performance in whatever sport you take part in.
Everyone knows that deep down even if you’re a weekend warrior, you still like to think you’re a pro with all the new gear, expensive bikes, strava profiles and the chat, it’s now time to start performing like one.
What is the difference?
Spin classes are popular, and for good reason, they provide a good workout. The downside is that the equipment is not technologically refined, and you are pedalling ‘blind’ with no feedback or measurements. Even the best spinning bikes will not duplicate the road or a biking position.
Rollers are like a treadmill for your bike. The wheel sits on 3 rollers which turn the wheels similar to a turbo trainer. Riding rollers or turbo trainers is not easy, you can set your own difficulty and it requires good balance. They can be a great way to train with your own bike, improving bike handling skills and bike positions but again this rarely has a resistance unit and you are, again, riding ‘blind’ with no feedback or measurement.
Whether you are training for an upcoming event, trying to maintain fitness and weight, change your cycling technique or even recovering from an injury, the Wattbike can adapt to your needs very easily and be one of the main areas that affect your results.
“A Wattbike has been instrumental to my development” explains Dan Stendall, triathlete and ultra-marathon runner.
What if I’m not a cyclist?
You don’t need to be a cyclist to be using or taking part in a Wattbike class.
Wattbikes can be used for cardio training, interval training, maintaining fitness through injury, post-op rehabilitation, speed training and performance analysis.
The benefits of using a Wattbike can very easily be utilised no matter what your sport, level and background.
When can you use the Wattbikes at Function Jigsaw?
Function Jigsaw will soon be running Wattbike classes, group training, Wattbike based rehab sessions, performance testing and much more.
At Function Jigsaw you have opportunity to have a one-to-one induction with a trained instructor to show you how to use the bike.
Once inducted on the bike the Wattbike’s will be open for open ride sessions.
You can then either have more performance testing in detail with the aim to set a structured training programme or you can utilise the open ride sessions that will be available.
